Heima App: A Home Management App Built with Passion
TL;DR: Heima is a home management app I originally built for my family, evolving from a simple idea in 2012 to a fully featured app launched in 2021. It includes smart shopping lists, meal planning, chore tracking with XP, and more. Despite competition and personal challenges—including a stroke and my daughter’s leukemia—I chose to double down on Heima in 2024. The app is powered by a Golang microservice backend, a Flutter frontend, and runs on Kubernetes at DigitalOcean.
Ada's Story
It’s been just over a year since we were hit with the most heart-wrenching news of our lives: our precious little Ada, who was only 2.5 years old at the time, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
We are facing another family crisis, the second one in a short period. Just the year before, I became ill and had a stroke after treatment from a chiropractor, a traume agains the neck causing Carotid artery dissection.

We’re always racing against the clock to get projects done, putting out fires, and sitting through never-ending meetings. Eventually, our creative juices just run dry and our drive starts to fade.

Heima App: Enhancing Shopping with Machine Learning and More
When I started developing Heima, it was out of a need to simplify the chaos of family life. Between planning dinners, managing grocery lists, driving the kids to activities, and trying to remember birthdays, life was filled with sticky notes on the fridge, disappearing lists, and a collection of apps that never quite did what I needed. I wanted an app that could bring all of these tasks together into one seamless experience.
